Student Success at The University of Toledo

What Is Student Success?

What is student success? How do we know if our students are successful? Is grade point average the measure? Is success measured by graduates' employment status or by their starting salaries? Do any of these measure the quality of a student's education and prospects for success?

Traditional measures of quality, such as graduation rates and post-graduation job placement rates and starting salaries, give some indication of educational quality, but they say nothing about what students can do with their education. Some employers express concern about the preparedness of America's college graduates. Further, evidence indicates that the United States is losing its competitive edge over other developed countries.

In response to these and other concerns, the Ohio Board of Regents has developed a means through which Ohio's institutions of higher learning can answer tough questions about the quality of student learning and demonstrate accountability for their students' education. That means is the Student Success Plan, which each institution is developing for Web publication.

The fundamental question is this: Are our students developing the skills and adopting the learning strategies that they need in order to compete in the global economy and to contribute to the needs of our society?

The University of Toledo answers this question with its Student Success Plan.

The University of Toledo Undergraduate Student Success Plan

Guided by its Mission Statement and shaped by its Core Values, The University of Toledo is committed to the success of its students. The new UT offers opportunity for everyone.

The University of Toledo's Undergraduate Student Success Plan measures success in three areas:

  1. General Education -- learning outcomes and assessment of student achievement of those outcomes in General Education.
  2. Undergraduate Programs -- learning outcomes and assessment of student achievement of those outcomes in undergraduate majors.
  3. Special Features -- learning opportunities, structures, and programs that complement classroom learning and help students to realize their professional and personal goals.
